One of the Oldest Distilleries in Scotland and Home to Release Number 5 in our Mey Selections Rare Cask Series.

Blair Athol Distillery stands at the gateway to the Highlands in picturesque Pitlochry which sits on the banks of the River Tay.  Blair Athol is the spiritual home of Bells Whisky, with its single malt being the ‘heart malt’ of the UK’s best selling blended Scotch whisky.

The distillery, which originally took its name from the Aldour burn which supplied it with its water, was established in 1798 making it one of the oldest operational distilleries in Scotland. The name change to Blair Athol, after the village seven miles to the North, came about in 1825, the reason for this has never been clear but it has been suggested it was to sweeten the Duke of Athol who owned the land.

Blair Athol’s distillery water source Allt Dour has remained unchanged since its inception, this combined with the peaty moorland and rugged Grampian mountain give the whisky its renowned mellow quality and smooth finish.

Around 95% of Blair Athol’s malt whisky is aged in bourbon barrels and goes into Diageo’s best selling Bell’s blend, which has owned the distillery since 1933. The remainder is matured in sherry casks and is bottled as a 12 year-old single malt under the Flora and Fauna label.

Our single cask is finished in first fill Oloroso Sherry, bringing the toasted oaky dryness that keeps the whisky nicely grounded.

Our Mey Selections Release Number 5 is available to purchase via our online shop from the 23rd of July.
